  • There have been series of major political developments since the last NICON conference in 2023. At the start of 2024, the NI Executive was restored after a two-year hiatus. In May 2024, Mike Nesbitt MLA replaced his UUP colleague, Robin Swann MLA, as Health Minister. Mr Nesbitt has since set out a series of key policy priorities, including an overt focus on health inequalities; the development a plan for hospital reconfiguration and a three year HSC strategy; and a ‘reboot’ of health reform, including a return visit to NI by international health expert Professor Rafael Bengoa.

Following the general election in July 2024, we also have a Labour government in place at Westminster for the first time in more than a decade, and a new UK Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting. The new UK government has already made a series of policy announcements on health, including within the recent King’s Speech.

This is a key time for influencing the future of health and social care within Northern Ireland We will use our time together at conference to explore what we can do, working creatively and collaboratively to decide what nettles we need to grasp to overcome current difficulties and support a better future for HSC in NI.

Over the course of the two days, we will hear from expert speakers and consider key issues, such as the reboot of Bengoa; workforce pressures; tech developments and opportunities for innovation, preventing illness and promoting wellness; addressing health inequalities; culture and leadership; collaboration and partnership; and productivity and service design (among other things).
