Responding to today’s Welsh Government Press Conference, Darren Hughes, Director of the Welsh NHS Confederation said:

“We welcome the updated COVID-19 vaccination strategy published today. Vaccinations for coronavirus are highly effective in protecting people and due to the hard work and dedication of everyone working on the vaccination delivery programme, more than 4.6 million COVID-19 vaccinations have been given in Wales.”

“With significant demand on NHS services and an extremely difficult winter ahead, it’s really important that people only call 999 or attend emergency departments if they are in urgent or emergency situations.  We should all access the most appropriate service for our needs, such as community pharmacies or NHS 111 Wales.”

“Following the knock-on effects of dealing with the pandemic, there’s no denying the health and care system has a huge challenge ahead. NHS leaders are doing all they can to deal with demand whilst rebuilding and planning for the future.”

“It is important that people continue to take up the offer of the COVID-19 vaccine and also the flu vaccine to help protect themselves and the NHS. The simple steps we have taken during the pandemic will also help keep us safe and well this winter against other illnesses, including the flu."
