Supporting members through the COVID-19 pandemic, the greatest challenge the health service has faced in its 73-year history.

We are actively engaging with developments, representing members' views and focusing our efforts on where there will be greatest use during the pandemic.

We are also contributing to the public debate on what the health and care system should look like post COVID-19 through our NHS Reset campaign.

    We are providing a strong voice for NHS leaders, both publicly in our media work and privately in our targeted behind-the-scenes influencing. 

    We are influencing national decision making on a range of issues, using member insights to influence and speed up change.

    This includes writing to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care to express concerns over the 'test, track and trace' strategy' and raising concerns over the production, procurement, and distribution of personal protective equipment (PPE), among other matters.

    Reflecting members' concerns, we have helped to secure:

    • the relaxation of Care Quality Commission inspections during COVID-19
    • updated guidance on PPE use that is location specific 
    • the prioritisation of NHS staff and other key workers in receiving the additional 3.5 million antigen tests 
    • expanding staff testing, including by lifting of the cap that restricted the percentage of NHS staff that trusts could test
    • automatic extension of visas of NHS staff that were due to expire in October
    • extension of death-in-service benefits to returning staff not on NHS Pension Scheme
    • PPE supply issues into primary and community care.

    We are producing guidance and resources in response to member feedback, helping to provide clarity and thought leadership. Our latest briefing, for example, explores the impact of COVID-19 on BME communities and health and care staff.

    And we are providing a daily digest of latest developments, feeding back on what we're hearing from the centre and members on the ground.

    National leadership, community response

    COVID-19 is not simply a health crisis but also a social and economic one, stretching across every part of the UK. While the government is coordinating a national response, it is the relationships, resilience and resourcefulness of local communities that will define how we come through this.

    We are working with national sector representative bodies including Universities UK, the Association of Colleges, the LEP Network, British BIDs and others to ensure that:

    our partners locally are clear about our sector’s immediate and longer term COVID-related needs and vice versa
    relationships are being made at the appropriate level, depending on the issue.

    We can share and promote examples of sectors coming together to display place-based leadership. 

    We have already cascaded information and intelligence throughout these sectors and facilitated several local partnerships.
