Responding to the latest figures from the ONS showing a rise in Covid-19 infections, Dr Layla McCay, director of policy at the NHS Confederation, said:

"During a time of increasing demand and huge vacancy gaps in the service, health care leaders and their staff across the NHS have been working incredibly hard to deliver vaccines for Covid-19 at a fast rate.

“We know Covid-19 will be with us for a while, but this week’s rise in numbers is a timely reminder that there are helpful actions we can take to protect ourselves and each other from Covid and other viruses as the winter progresses. It would be helpful for the government to reinvigorate clear public messaging over the coming weeks and months to help us stem the tide of any further increases and keep people well.”
