NHS Confederation responds to the latest NHS workforce statistics (June 2023)

Dr Layla McCay responds to the latest NHS workforce statistics.

29 June 2023

Responding to the latest statistics on the NHS workforce in England, Dr Layla McCay, director of policy at the NHS Confederation, said:

“While leaders will be pleased to see a rise of over 4% of full time staff working in hospitals and community health and a slower leaving rate compared to this time last year, they will still be concerned by the chronic workforce shortages and gaps within the service, which is adding more pressure on staff as they continue to tackle waiting lists for elective care.

“With looming industrial action and still 112,000 vacancies in the service, NHS leaders will be anxiously waiting to see how the workforce plan will address staffing gaps, and how it will be funded, so that the health service can continue to care for and meet the needs of its patients as safely and quickly as possible.”
