The NHS workforce was carrying close to 90,000 vacancies prior to COVID-19, with a further 120,000 vacancies in social care. COVID-19 has led to a large backlog of care and could lead to many staff changing the way they work to achieve a better work/life balance, potentially reducing workforce capacity even further. Widening the workforce has been critical in delivering care during this period, particularly in relation to the vaccine programme but there are other great examples of how innovative thinking has supported the NHS in widening their workforce.

The workforce challenges facing the NHS are considerable, yet there are ways we can use volunteers and others to support our existing workforce and patients. This webinar explored and highlighted some of the ways volunteers and students have supported the NHS over the past year and discussed what our relationship with volunteering could look like in the future.
