Commenting on the news that more than 20 million UK adults have received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, Ruth Rankine, director of primary care at the NHS Confederation, said:

“This is another important milestone, especially given the context of the increased threat from the variant first identified in India and early data suggesting increasing confidence that vaccines work against it.

“Vaccination remains our strongest defence against the virus - alongside continued vigilance and a robust test and trace system – and it is vital that people come forward when it is their turn to receive the jab.

“So many people across the NHS – including in primary care – have worked incredibly hard to make the vaccination programme the success it is and this latest achievement is a testament to them. With the programme set to accelerate again, they will need support, including the time to make new arrangements and rebook patients, on top of clarity on scheduling and supply.”
