30 April 2021

Commenting on the devastating surge in the COVID-19 pandemic in India, Lord Victor Adebowale, chair of the NHS Confederation said:

“The ongoing and extremely concerning COVID-19 crisis in India is truly distressing for the people living there. Our thoughts, and those of our members, are with the Indian public and our fellow healthcare workers as they continue to battle against this terrible and deadly virus.

“The NHS employs thousands of people who come from and have links with India and whose family, friends and colleagues are living and working through a truly traumatic time. People from India have contributed so much to our health service, and now, more than ever, they and their loved ones in India need our help.

“As the situation unfolds, we know our members will be focusing on the support our Indian staff and colleagues will need to get them through this very difficult time.

“We welcome the aid being provided by the UK government in sending supplies to the country, as well as the role NHS England and NHS Improvement is playing in providing expertise and advice on setting up surge hospitals and staffing and clinical pathways to our Indian counterparts. We are united with the people of India in their continued fight against this global COVID-19 emergency.”
