Important to continue supporting test and trace to keep virus under control

Dr Layla McCay, director of policy, comments on the latest test and trace and app data.

Commenting on the latest test and trace and COVID-19 app data, Dr Layla McCay, director of policy at the NHS Confederation, said:

“It’s concerning to see some of the key test and trace metrics falling significantly, with venue check-ins down 65 per cent week-on-week. NHS COVID-19 app ‘pings’ are also markedly down, and although some of this can be explained by a reduction in new cases, it is worrying that since ‘Freedom Day’, far fewer people are using the app to check into venues, and fewer people are being tested.

“It’s really important that everyone continues to support the test and trace programme, by getting tested, by supplying details of close contacts to tracers, and by checking in at venues through the app.

“We know people are keen to enjoy the relaxation of restrictions and that they are concerned about being ‘pinged’ and having to self-isolate, but the pandemic is not yet over, and one of the strongest tools we have available to curb the spread is isolation after being in contact with someone who has COVID-19.

“As part of our #NotTooMuchToMask campaign, we are urging the public to keep taking simple steps to protect themselves and others, including getting tested and self-isolating, when needed. To help make that possible, the government must make sure everyone is fully supported to do so, including financially.”
