As we emerge from the pandemic, political attention is turning to the pre-election countdown with around two years to go before the next general election. The NHS is again expected to be a defining election issue and there is growing anxiety among political leaders that waiting times and other measures of performance will have deteriorated further by 2024.

With a Health and Care Bill going through Parliament, which is set to increase the secretary of state for health and social care’s powers of direction over the NHS, we are already seeing a more interventionist secretary of state, with numerous new white papers in development.

In this session, our director of communications and membership operations, Daniel Reynolds, will outline the latest policy and political developments in the NHS and what it means for the Confederation’s members.
