EDI Directors Programme

For strategic leaders delivering improvement through tackling inequality.

24 October 2023

The NHS Confederation is the membership organisation that brings together and speaks for the whole healthcare system in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Supporting the need for collaboration and inclusivity across systems, we work with leaders to develop their skills, equipping them with tools, ideas and insights, and connecting them with a community of their peers.

Building on our successful Diversity in Health and Care Partners Programme, which has already supported over 300 organisations over the last decade, we are pleased to announce that we are now gauging interest in a bespoke offer of strategic leadership support, tailored specifically to those responsible at director-level for tackling inequalities; be that within the wider equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) remit or with a focus on health inequalities (HI).

Our proposed support offer for strategic EDI leaders will enhance the existing skills of those working strategically to tackle inequality for those using and working within health and care organisations. The programme will rest on three key pillars, as determined by the NHS Confederation’s three-part leadership support pledge:

  • Represent: participants will be supported to build a national profile for the tackling inequalities EDI agenda through identifying and collectivising their interests and coordinating an approach to influencing decision-makers, based on first-hand knowledge of EDI/HI in practice.
  • Support: participants will be supported to own their position within this space – and to showcase the high standard of existing practice in this area. Individuals will be supported to develop their leadership capability and their expertise as subject matter experts within the field of tackling inequality.
  • Connect: participants will be encouraged to work collaboratively with peers, both within and across systems, forming place-based partnerships as well as national alliances in order to share innovation and best practice, and make change happen.

We are passionate and practical about tackling inequality as a core strategic function for all health and care organisations, appropriately resourced and with robust support from senior leadership.

We believe that leaders at the forefront of tackling inequality should be supported to develop their skills as valued experts within their organisations. They also should have clear opportunities for progression, also supporting leadership development for others.

We have co-designed this ambitious offer with members, as a clear value-add for the NHS workforce and with a view to improving access, experience and outcomes for those served by the NHS. We will continue to develop this programme in collaboration with leaders to provide a truly tailored package of support.
