The National Audit Office measures the financial sustainability of the NHS, determining that it cannot reasonably be described as ‘sustainable’

29 / 1 / 2019 4.02pm

This report summarises the financial position of the NHS in 2017/18. Concluding that it is not on a sustainable footing, in spite of the addition funding promised, the report determines that this funding will not be used to it’s optimum potential due to staff shortages and a lack of clarity over where this funding will be allocated. The paper recommends changes including; the redesign of tariffs, national regulatory alignment to support local system working and better support for the worst performing trusts.

The King’s Fund reflects on the performance of the NHS, finding that the service is facing a broadly challenging environment

29 / 1 / 2019 2.37pm

This paper looks at the performance of the NHS in three key areas: finance, performance and mental health. It finds that ‘red is the new black’ when it comes to NHS finances, with 48 per cent of trusts forecasting deficits by the end of 2018. For performance, the NHS fell short of a number of key targets and experienced a significant increase in emergency activity on 2017. While mental health services performed better in terms of finance and targets than the rest of the provider sector, the report finds that they are still lacking the breadth of services they should provide.

The CQC find that safety culture within NHS organisations is challenging, with mixed messaging from the centre and a lack of dedicated resources.

29 / 1 / 2019 2.19pm

This report examines current safety culture within the NHS in order to determine how best to make improvements. The paper looks at culture at the trust level, national level and individual level. It finds that mixed messaging from national bodies, big variation in the implementation of safety alerts between trusts and a culture of confusion for staff all contribute to a relatively weak safety culture within the NHS. CQC recommends a raft of reforms to remedy this, including closer national working, enhanced safety training for staff and clearer channels of communication between trusts and between trusts and national bodies.
