Responding to the health and social care secretary's declaration of a "national war on cancer" and the new call for evidence to inform a 10-Year Cancer Plan for England, Rory Deighton, senior programme lead for the NHS Confederation's Acute Network, said:

"The NHS is doing everything it can for patients with cancer, with a record 246,000 tests being carried out in a month. However, the pandemic has hit these services hard and so, health leaders welcome the introduction of a Government strategy to improve outcomes and care.

"England has long lagged behind some of our European neighbours, including France and Germany, for cancer survival rates, and so leaders share the Government’s vision to make cancer care and treatment world class. Doing that will require sustained investment, a long-term workforce plan, and a forensic look at ways to improve prevention, accelerate diagnoses, and upgrade treatments."
