LGBT History Month

LGBT History Month celebrates LGBT+ people in all their diversity, raises awareness, and combats prejudice with education. The annual event, which takes place every February, began in 2005. This year's theme is Body, Mind, Spirit.

What's happening in the NHS during LGBT History Month

External events

  • LGBT+ Network film premiere and toolkit launch – 3pm-4.30pm, 23 February 2021
    Register for the nationwide premiere of Any Other Business, followed by a live Q&A panel discussion. The movie tells the story of Natasha, a lesbian cisgender media officer at Greenwell Trust. Natasha faces fundamental questions about the purpose of the network, issues around inclusion, and where the network is heading. Book your place: Any Other Business - film launch event
    A free toolkit is available to all organisations, individuals and networks to help drive the conversation about how your networks can thrive locally. It is based around the film and provides additional learning resources. The toolkit will be available from 23 February via the LGBT+ Network's website.
  • Sheffield Children's Hospital is holding two talks during LGBT History Month
    Lunch and learn with Dr Michael Brady, NHS England LGBT+ health advisor - 15 February, 1pm - 2pm.
    Lunch and learn with Steph Meech, paramedic - transgender experience in healthcare - 24 February, 1pm - 2pm.

  • Health & Care LGBTQ+ Leaders Network & Mental Health Network – Supporting the mental health of young people who identify as LGBTQ+
    12pm – 1.30pm, Thursday 25 February 
    Book your free place at our webinar, which will look at how we ensure that services meet the needs of young people who identify as LGBTQ+. Attendees will hear findings from the national research study Queer Futures 2, and good practice from across the country. Speakers include:
    • Elizabeth McDermott, Chief Investigator, Queer Futures
    • Dr Lynne Green, Clinical Director, Kooth PLC
    • Henry Poultney, Freedom LGBTQ+ Team Manager, OTR Bristol

  • Northern Care Alliance - LGBT History Month events
    The Northern Care Alliance LGBTQ+ Staff Network has organised a programme of virtual activities with a focus on Mind, Body, and Spirit. They are open to all NHS staff across the country and can be booked via this link. For more information, contact Oliver.Butterworth@pat.nhs.uk 
    Events include:
    LGBT book club, LGBT poetry evening, spirituality session delivered by the Salford Royal Chaplaincy Team, a pecha kucha social get together, and the LGBTQ+ cancer experience talk led by Stewart O’Callaghan – Founder and Exec Directory of Live Through This.
  • LGBT People and cancer roundtable, Friday 19 February 10.30 am - 1.30pm
    NHS England’s LGBT health team is holding a virtual roundtable to discuss the issues affecting LGBT people living with cancer, including the current impacts of COVID-19. Presentations to include:
    - introduction to LGBT inequalities and cancer, monitoring and data collection, screening, education and training for the workforce, and LGBT young people.

  • Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust is hosting a talk and testing session to highlight the services they provide. It’s taking place on 28 February 2pm - 6pm at the Armistead Centre, which provides free and confidential sexual health and wellbeing support and advice to Liverpool’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBTQI+) community.

  • Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust is is profiling LGBT+ individuals. Follow them @LSCFTequality to learn how history, culture, politics and sport have been shaped by the LGBT+ community. 
  • North West Boroughs Healthcare has produced a guide about the history and challenges the LGBT communities have faced over the decades from the first Pride event to the creation of LGBT History Month. 
  • Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust shared a flyer about LGBT History Month events in Shrewsbury.

  • Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is running a programme of webinars throughout February, which are open to NHS Lincolnshire staff working at LPFT, LCHS, and ULHT. Find out more and book a place. 

  • Northumbria Healthcare Trust has a comprehensive programme of activities including a learning session ‘Everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask’, with a focus on trans issues.

  • North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has a week of themed activities which include; the history of the LGBT community over the decades; a guide to terminology; intersectionality for our LGBT+ communities and the history of drag queens and recent drag cultural influences on social media and language.

  • Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust and Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust are hosting a meeting focusing on the mind, body and spirit. Taking place Monday 22 February, 9.30am – 1.30pm. Confirmed speakers include Dr Michael Brady, national LGBT advisor, Tim Couchman, equality and diversity lead, and Spectrum Staff Network.

  • Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust is holding a webinar for staff on Monday 8 February at 1pm
    The webinar features Dr Michael Brady and will focus on health inequalities faced by the LGBTQ+ community with a Q&A.

  • Medway Community Healthcare has launched a new Inclusion Network and is celebrating LGBT History Month with a range of internal events that showcase pioneering LGBTQ+ influencers and promote LGBTQ+ history to educate, break down barriers, and foster an open and supportive culture.
