NHS Confederation submission to Work and Pensions Select Committee inquiry on Job Centre Reform

The NHS Confederation has been collaborating with the Department for Work and Pensions Joint Health and Work Unit since 2023, ensuring integrated care system (ICS) leaders’ voices are reflected in policies like the Get Britain Working White Paper. ICSs play a crucial role in supporting economic and social development, acting as ‘anchor systems’ to strengthen local resilience and address health determinants.
The NHS Confederation has developed frameworks to integrate health and prosperity and is working closely with Combined Authority Mayors to tackle economic inactivity. NHS and Jobcentre Plus collaborations across regions demonstrate efforts to reduce health-related employment barriers, including initiatives like the WorkWell programme, which connects health, employment, and community services to support people back into work. Pilot results show strong engagement and impact, highlighting the importance of continued funding beyond 2025-2026. ICS leaders advocate for longer-term financial commitments to enhance population health, reduce inequalities, and drive sustainable social and economic development.
