About the role

As the Programme Lead in the Step into Health team at NHS Employers you will:

  • Lead the delivery of the Step into Health programme which supports the recruitment of members of the Armed Forces community into roles in the NHS.
  • Work alongside a broad range of internal and external stakeholders and ensure that the programme remains coherent with wider NHS workforce initiatives and priorities.
  • Use developed networking, relationship building and communication skills to ensure that the programme competes within the Armed Forces employment arena.
  • Support the NHS Employers’ work on community engagement/widening participation

  • As the Step into Health Programme Lead your main duties will include: 

     

    • Programme leadership:
      • Develop and agree work proposals and programme plans to ensure the delivery of the key elements of the work
      • Evaluate the effectiveness of programme deliverables
      • Liaise with colleagues from across the organisation to ensure maximum synergy and integration with other programmes
      • Liaise with commissioners to identify key priorities for the work area, to feedback on delivery against plans and to provide evidence of impact
      • Ensure delivery of contracted work within budget and timescales
      • Effectively evaluate the programme and delivery
    • Provide effective inclusive leadership in the team, in accordance with organisational values (listed in the person specification but currently being reviewed) and be responsible for the day to day management of the programme team, ensuring team objectives are well defined and met.
    • Ensure all activities reflect equality, diversity and inclusion legislation and best practice.
    • Represent NHS Employers at meetings relating to the work programmes.
    • Develop and implement stakeholder engagement plans to ensure the NHS is appropriately represented and supported in the work programme.
    • Develop and manage content on the NHS Employers website and develop other communications materials as required, ensuring all aspects are accurate, provide clarity on policy intentions, describe good employment practice and reflect the needs of the service.
    • Develop resources and publications for the NHS, wider stakeholders and/or colleagues, to support the work programmes.
    • Design and chair/facilitate events and workshops to listen to, gather and influence views from employers, partners and stakeholders.
    • Identify detailed case study materials to help promote good practice.
    • Engage directly with key stakeholders at local and national level, listening to views and ensuring employer position is clearly represented and understood.
    • Analyse intelligence, trends and relevant research in the subject area to influence strategic decision making for the NHS.
    • Support to the senior team in the development of new and potential areas of work/research including completing tenders and commissions.

    Experience

    • Recent experience of leading work in an HR, workforce or organisational development role in a complex organisation or environment
    • Experience of working in teams and line management
    • Experience of using project/programme management methods
    • Experience of producing written briefings and reports and delivering presentations to external audiences
    • Experience of evaluating activity to demonstrate impact
    • Experience of facilitating groups
    • Experience of working with the Armed Forces Community

    Knowledge

    • Understanding of employment issues affecting the Armed Forces Community
    • Knowledge of recruitment and retention practice
    • Understanding the equality and diversity issues related to this role

    Skills

    • Ability to develop effective and productive professional working relationships at a senior level, both within and outside the NHS.
    • Engagement, facilitation and influencing skills
    • Excellent communications skills (oral, written and presentation)
    • Able to quickly digest information and gain knowledge of new work areas to maximise opportunities and share learning.
    • Able to problem solve, negotiate successful outcomes and escalate issues where necessary.
    • Adaptable and able to prioritise and manage conflicting priorities.
    • Web / computer literate
    • Ability to generate confidence with a range of stakeholders

  • Experience

    • Lived experience in the Armed Forces
    • Experience of representing an organisation to outside bodies

    Knowledge

    • Knowledge and some understanding of wider health service developments
    • Understanding of NHS workforce and employment practice
