Aims and scope of the forum

The forum provides a dedicated platform for Medical Directors to engage in discussion, network with peers and share their experience and good practice. The forum also provides a mechanism for Medical Directors working in the mental health sector to strengthen their independent, collective voice in the national debate on policy.

Who we are

Chair

Dr Julie Hankin, Chair of the Mental Health Medical Director’s Forum and Executive Medical Director, Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

Julie is currently the Executive Medical Director, Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Julie has had a career across a number of mental health trusts. Before joining Nottinghamshire Healthcare, she was Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Director at Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, where she worked since 2005, within a number of management and leadership roles.  Julie’s career has included Clinical Director roles for Service Redesign, Service Improvement, Governance and Adult Services. Julie has also been influential at a regional and national level, most recently as a National Professional Advisor for Mental Health for the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

 

 

Vice-Chair

Dr Faouzi Alam, Medical Director, Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

Born in Lebanon, Faouzi moved to Latvia and graduated as medical doctor in 1996. He moved to Russia and lived there for 5 years to study his post-graduate as a renal physician and moved to the UK in 2001. Following his move, and inspired by his research into psychosis within people receiving renal haemodialysis, Faouzi  decided to change direction and trained to become an acute care consultant, taking a job within CWP and the early intervention team in 2007. With over 20 years’ experience as a doctor, Faouzi was appointed as joint medical director in October 2013. He is also currently the Chair for the Records and Clinical Systems Group.

The announcement by the Secretary of State of a raft of measures designed to improve the mental health of NHS staff is an important and welcome one. It is a first step in the NHS making good on the NHS Ten Year Plan's desire to see employers having "a key role to play in supporting their staff to stay well and in work.” Given the higher than average sickness rates in the NHS compared to other public sector organisations, Peter Molyneux, chair of Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, explains why it is important that the NHS sets the standard.
