We are working with partners to support the development of health and wellbeing boards.
Health and wellbeing boards' system leadership is vital to delivering integrated care, transforming services to address the financial and demographic challenges, and tackling health inequalities.
Ahead of their one-year anniversary on 1 April 2014, we teamed up with partners to publish practical resources distilling lessons learned from the past year.
The multimedia resources – a set of slide packs and videos – share valuable learning and insight from HWBs across England on their development as system leader.
They explore three key themes:
The videos capture HWB member's reflections on progress made in developing shared leadership within their board, working with other HWBs, and what boards could do next as they develop.

Learning sets
The Department of Health funded a health and wellbeing board learning set project to consider issues of importance to the development of HWBs nationally, and to develop products that will be of use to them on these issues.
We worked alongside the Local Government Association, NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and Department of Health to support the project.
- The learning sets were arranged around the following themes:
- Improving the health of the population
- Bringing collaborative leadership to major service reconfiguration
- Creating effective governance arrangements
- How do we hardwire public engagement into the work of the board?
- Raising the bar on Joint Strategic Needs Assessments and Joint Health and Wellbeing strategies
- Making the best use of collective resources
- Improving adult and older people services through more effective joint working
- Improving children’s services through more effective joint working
- Criminal justice and health and wellbeing boards.
