Local economic growth leaders

The 38 local enterprise partnerships (LEPs) in England are business-led bodies authorised by government to provide local strategic economic leadership of growth.

They are involved in all policy areas relating to growth. Each LEP is responsible for preparing a Strategic Economic Plan for their particular economy and will work with a range of public, private and third sector organisations to understand the local priorities and focus for investment.

The local landscape is changing fast, with moves towards new and strengthened Combined Authorities (CAs) and formal models of devolution taking place across England. LEPs and CAs will work closely in the coming years to shape their own economic development plans.

LEPs have access to a range of funding sources directed by government, including City Deals, European Structural and Investment Funds and the Local Growth Fund.

Mapping your leaders of growth

The NHS Confederation has supported several NHS colleagues to establish relationships with their respective LEPs and, increasingly, Combined Authority leaders.

Working with the NHS

Traditionally the NHS has not engaged with LEPs, and vice versa. This is now changing, with the NHS Confederation working at both national and local level to help increase knowledge and establish relationships. 

As we stated in September 2015 in our response to the Communities and Local Government Select Committee inquiry into the government's Cities and Local Government Devolution Bill:

"We are already seeing increased engagement at local level between the NHS and local leaders of economic growth, with several proposals and initiatives which are explicit about their economic development intentions. This represents a better understanding, from both within the health sector and among our partners, of the NHS’ significant role in the local economy as a good local employer, ensuring a healthy, resilient and productive population, and stimulating new markets for technologies and other valuable innovations."
