BME Leadership Network

NHS Confederation BME Network Logo

The BME Leadership Network exists to strengthen the voice of black and minority ethnic (BME) leaders in England and to support health and care organisations to meet the needs of all communities.

It meets quarterly and seeks to:

  • improve understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion and publish the benefits to help deliver better care for all
  • improve and sustain the number of BME leaders working in the NHS
  • profile the diverse range of BME leaders delivering solutions across the health and care system.

The network is co-chaired by Danielle Oum, chair of Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust and Ifti Majid, chief executive of Derbyshire Healthcare.

Formal members of the network will be leaders from BME backgrounds, while we encourage non-BME leaders to become supporters. Sign up by completing this form

COVID-19: supporting members

Evidence in the UK and abroad has highlighted the disproportionate impact of COVID-10 on people from BME backgrounds. This is deeply troubling.

We have been working with members and local and national NHS organisations to mitigate the risks to BME communities and health and care professionals. Our briefing, released in April 2020, put forward a number of measures to safeguard communities, patients and staff.

We are continuing to work with NHS England and NHS Improvement on this issue, working with network members and the wider NHS Confederation membership to effect change. This includes a research into the underlying factors driving the unequal impact.

We have also been reflecting members' concerns in the media.
