You have the right to choose where you receive NHS treatment

16 / 02 / 2018

The Independent Healthcare Providers Network has produced an infographic to highlight what legal rights patients have when choosing where to receive their NHS care, including:

  • The right to choose where you are referred to receive a diagnosis or treatment on the NHS.
  • The right to be referred to a different hospital if you have to wait more than 2 weeks to see a specialist for suspected cancer.
  • The right to be referred to a different hospital if you have to wait more than 18 weeks for non-urgent treatment.

While NHS patients have had these rights for the last decade, public awareness is extremely low – the last time the NHS officially measured it, only 47% people were aware of their right to choose which provider they receive their NHS care from with a as little as 40% actually being offered a choice by their GP.
