Engaging with BME communities: insights for impact

This report highlights ways in which providers and commissioners have developed innovative solutions and approaches to better cater for and engage with BME communities.


Equality and diversity are often seen as mandatory statutory considerations, ‘morally right’ actions and activities, or exercises in political correctness.

In truth, the guiding principles of the NHS make it clear that embracing and promoting equality and diversity are crucial to delivering the highest quality service to the public we serve.

There are significant barriers to accessing healthcare for large sections of our society. We see many examples in the NHS of where ‘barrier busting’ is happening, led by inspirational and dedicated leaders. This paper highlights just some of these examples.

The announcement by the Secretary of State of a raft of measures designed to improve the mental health of NHS staff is an important and welcome one. It is a first step in the NHS making good on the NHS Ten Year Plan's desire to see employers having "a key role to play in supporting their staff to stay well and in work.” Given the higher than average sickness rates in the NHS compared to other public sector organisations, Peter Molyneux, chair of Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, explains why it is important that the NHS sets the standard.
