Further to the EU General Data Protection Regulation, the European Commission has released additional initiatives which could impact on the NHS.
In January 2017, the European Commission issued a proposal for a review of the current EU legislation on ePrivacy – the protection of personal data in electronic communications.
While there is an exemption for emergency services, this proposal for a Regulation will continue to apply to all hospitals and health care settings which provide internet services to their patients. Also, it could impact the electronic communications sent to patients by GPs and partner organisations.
You can find the proposal for a new ePrivacy Regulation here.
The European Parliament has produced a helpful report on the new law on e-Privacy and the current state of play in the negotiation process.
