The biggest vaccination programme the NHS in Wales has ever had to deliver

Darren Hughes

Responding to the latest update from the Welsh Government on the Coronavirus pandemic, Darren Hughes, Director of the Welsh NHS Confederation said:

“The vaccine roll-out is a crucial part of our response to the Coronavirus pandemic. It represents genuine light at the end of the tunnel for us all. However, it is going to be a huge undertaking.

“The NHS in Wales has a strong track record of delivering mass vaccinations, but this is the biggest vaccination programme we have ever had to deliver, and it will take time.

“It’s important to note while we’re delivering these vaccines, we are also seeing the NHS come under the most critical pressure we have seen throughout the pandemic.

“This means a significant amount of our resource is being taken up by the response to Coronavirus, however we still urge people to get in touch with the NHS if they have a significant and urgent health problem. We will do all we can to help you get the best outcome possible in a safe way.

“There are now more people in hospital with or recovering from COVID than ever before, with more patients expected over the coming weeks, and therefore it’s crucial that we get a high level of support from the public and we respect the restrictions that are in place now.

“Every day we immunise more and more people in Wales. While there may be bumps in the road, each day is a day closer to a better future not just for people in Wales, but also for our staff who continue to work under extreme pressure to treat as many people as possible.
