Responding to the results of the Care Quality Commission's 2019 adult inpatient survey, Niall Dickson, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, said: "This is a pre-pandemic picture, which shows hospitals working well, but under great pressure, with real issues around access and discharge.
"We are now living in a different world, which has changed so many aspects of how health and care services are delivered. The challenge now is to make sure that positive changes achieved during the crisis are banked and secured and that the collaboration achieved becomes the new normal. National funding and support will be essential if we are to achieve this, as well as a recognition of the energy, commitment and dedication of frontline health and care workers."
