No shortage of ideas to fix social care – what we need is action, says NHS Confederation

Niall Dickson

Responding to Policy Exchange’s report 21st Century Social Care, Niall Dickson, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, which leads the Health for Care coalition of 15 health organisations, said: “Record numbers of people are being left to struggle without the care and support they need, so this report is another important contribution to how we can fix the crisis in social care.

“We are not short of ideas to fix social care – what we need is action from government and, ideally, a cross party agreement on the way forward. This is the great social issue of our time but it has largely been ignored by the political class. Millions of the most vulnerable together with their family carers are living in pain and misery because of this political failure.

“And for the NHS, the sister service, funding and reforming social care is mission critical. Without it being fixed the NHS will fail. Our Health for Care coalition brings together 15 national organisations in health to campaign for a sustainable social care system. We need to mobilise the NHS and the public to address this – we hope as many as possible will join the 125 000 who have already supported our petition, calling on the government to act.”
