The SDO Network is piloting two action learning sets programmes, one in the North East for directorate, operational and middle NHS managers and one in the North West for New NHS Managers. The aim of both action learning sets is to enable managers to access and use health services research more effectively so they can improve and develop the services they manage.
Act now last few places on both sets still available
The closing date for the North West action learning set for new NHS managers has been extended to the Friday 12th September and is now open to managers who haven't been on the NHS Management Training Scheme as Well. The first action learning set will be held on Thursday 25th September.
The first action learning set in the North East will take place on Friday 5th of September. There are still places available on this set and they are now available to NHS Managers working outside the North East SHA area.
What is action learning?
'Action learning is a method for individual and organisational development. Working in small groups, people tackle important organisational issues or problems and learn from their attempts to change things. Action learning brings people together to exchange, support and challenge each other in seeking to act and learn.' *

Set, Ready to Go
Action Learning may indeed conjure up images of Bond-esque style NHS managers charging through academic institutions in the relentless pursuit of knowledge. In reality it's an altogether more sedate, but just as interesting opportunity to share knowledge in confidence with peers from across the spectrum of the NHS.
Action Learning for new managers
The action learning set in the North West has got off to a strong start. There are eight people in the set who are near the start of their careers as NHS managers working in PCTs, and Hospital Trusts from across the region.
