SDO and Economic Social Research Council (ESRC) are looking for two trusts to pilot academic placement fellowships.
The benefits for NHS trusts
The placements will:
- enable an academic to conduct a relevant project within a trust for between 6-12 months
- The scheme supports senior to mid level academics to spend time within a partner NHS Trusts to undertake relevant health services research and to develop the research skills of partner employees.
- costs will be shared between SDO/ESRC and the host trust. The scheme covers the full salary of the fellow, while fellows remain employed by their academic institutions. The approximate cost to the host trust is £25,000 with the SDO/ESCR covering the remaining £50,000.
- The pilots will also be used to assess the infra structure the SDO Network would require if the scheme was rolled out on a larger scale.

The process
- trusts need to be members of the SDO Network to apply.
- trusts are required to complete a short application form outlining their proposal and the skills a fellow would be expected to bring to the project.
- If proposals are agreed to be appropriate by a SDO/ ESRC panel, ESRC will recruit an appropriate academic.
- Interviews with applicants will be carried out by SDO/ESRC/host trust staff.

Productive Ward placement fellowship in East of England SHA
Summary: The Productive Ward programme has been piloted in acute hospitals by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement, and is proposed as a useful tool to raise the safety and quality of care for patients. It is being implemented in 13 Trusts in the east of England and will be rolled out into community and mental health settings (a possible 40 Trusts in all). The east of England steering group has identified the opportunity for research leading from the implementation of the programme.

ESRC Follow-on Funding Scheme
What is the Follow-on Funding Scheme?
The Scheme provides follow-on funding to undertake additional knowledge transfer and impact generation activities that can demonstrate the potential for significant economic, social, policy and/or practice benefit(s). Applications that seek to commercialise research and those from resources and methods research investments will also be eligible to apply. Research that has not been funded by the ESRC is eligible for this program.

Productive Ward Academic Placement
I had never heard of an SDO/ESRC Placement Fellowships before so when an e-mail arrived in my Inbox telling me about an opportunity to apply for one, co-funded by the local strategic Health Authority, I decide to find out more about them.
