Welcome to the first update of the SDO Network, the Network which aims to support NHS managers' access and use of research. These updates will keep you informed of the work of the Network and provide information on the events and services the Network is providing.
The SDO Network is holding its first event on 9 May. Called Shifting care: what's the evidence? is a half day interactive learning seminar that will provide delegates with the latest information from researchers and frontline managers who have led the way in the transfer of services from hospitals to the community. Key note speakers include Professor Martin Roland and Dr Keith Freeman, this event is available at a discounted rate to all SDO Network members.
The SDO Network session at the NHS Confederation annual conference will bring NHS managers up to speed on the latest developments in research that are likely to impact on the delivery and commissioning of NHS services. Managers will have the opportunity to inform the direction of research and research engagement activities. The facilitative role of the SDO Network will also be described.
NIHR SDO and HSRN are providing a two day conference on 4 and 5 June, Delivering better health services The SDO Network will be hosting an evening session on 4 June (5 to 6.30pm) to introduce the Network and our work.
The SDO Network will be running action learning sets to enable middle mangers to access and use research more effectively in the North East, and are scheduled to start in June 2008. These learning sets will be facilitated and hosted by South Tees NHS Trust. Action learning sets for new NHS managers are also planned with North West Strategic Health Authority.
The NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement has agreed to share with SDO Network members the names and contact details of organisations on its preferred providers for research and evaluation services. The list aims to help SDO Network members who want to quickly procure an evaluation or research service but are unclear where to look for the providers of these services. The list will be available on the SDO Network web pages soon.
The SDO Network and Economic Social Research Council (ESRC) have agreed to jointly fund two academic placements as pilots with NHS trusts that are SDO Network members. The placements will enable an academic to conduct a relevant project within a trust for between six and 12 months, with costs being borne between SDO/ESRC and the host trust. The SDO Network is currently in discussion with four SDO Network members to assess their suitability to participate in the pilots.
