The terms of two current Board members, Nick Black and Bonnie Sibbald, expire in April 2008. In addition, the HSRN is seeking two senior NHS managers to join the Board.

NHS management positions

The HSRN is seeking two senior NHS managers to join its Executive Board. The Board meets four times a year in London and Board members serve for a period of three years.

The NHS Confederation helped establish the HSRN in April 2005. Its creation responded to a need to find new and better ways to promote dialogue between policy makers, managers, funders and researchers to ensure research informs policy and managerial decision making.

To help ensure the HSRN meets its aims its Board is structured so that it has representation from researchers, research funders and NHS managers. In addition to the NHS Confederation's policy director, there are two NHS management representatives on the Board.

The perspective that managers bring to the Board is extremely important in ensuring the HSRN works effectively towards its goals. In particular, its principle aim to encourage the use of research findings in policy making and management, and in turn to ensure research priorities reflect the needs of the public, managers and policymakers. Current membership of the Board is as follows:

• Prof Charles Wolfe, Head of Health and Social Care Research, Director of R&D, Kings College London, Guys and St Thomas - Elected HSR member
• Keith Chantler, Associate Medical Director (non-clinical) Central Manchester and Manchester Children's University Hospital Trust - NHS management rep
• Dr Hugo Mascie-Taylor, Medical Director, The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust - NHS management rep
• Dr Peter Sneddon, Head of Research Programmes - Department of Health
• Wendy Buckley, Assistant Director, Health Foundation - The Health Foundation

If you would like to join the HSRN Executive Board, please complete an application form by Friday 1 February. If there are more than two applications, an election will be held in which all HSRN member organisations will have the opportunity to vote.

HSR member positions

Four members of the Executive Board are elected from the HSR members of the HSRN to serve for a period of three years. The terms of two current Board members, Nick Black and Bonnie Sibbald, expire in April 2008. You are invited to nominate a candidate for election to the Health Services Research Network Executive Board for 2008-10.

Your organisation may nominate one person, either from your organization or from another corporate member of the HSRN. The full list of member organisations appears on the HSRN website. The two existing Board members whose term of service is ending may stand for re-election.

Nominees must complete a nomination form, including a statement of up to 250 words outlining their suitability for the role. Nominees are asked to note that Board members are expected to:

• Attend four Board meetings a year in London
• Contribute to the strategic direction of HSRN to ensure it fulfils aims and objectives
• Approve the work programme, business plan, budget and subscription fees
• Take responsibility for steering specific work areas including responsibility for the organisation of one HSRN annual research meeting, and other projects as agreed by the Board including responses to consultations
• Monitor performance of HSRN against the agreed work programme and ensure the Board is kept fully informed through timely and relevant information about Network management
• Promoting the HSR Network
