Researchers examine the relationship between policing and health costs

This research in the British Journal of Psychiatry looks at the relationship between policing and health costs in mental health patients. It finds lower policing costs for those in contact with a care team for longer than two months at the point of police contact. It recommends improved care through street triage, MHA assessments and link worker provision, although concedes that all of these carry increased costs.

Five Year Forward View for Mental Health celebrates its first birthday- what progress has been made?

Theresa May outlines new package of support to 'transform mental health support'

In her first major speech of the year, the Prime Minister, Theresa May, outlined a package of measures to transform mental health support in schools, workplaces and communities. The Prime Minister used the annual Charity Commission lecture to outline her vision for parity of esteem, stating that this can only be achieved if every institution recognises the role it plays in delivering this objective.

CQC publish annual review of the Mental Health Act

In its annual review of the Mental Health Act the Care Quality Commission outlines how several healthcare services in England are using the Act to maximise people’s recovery, wellbeing and support when they have been detained. However, it raises concerns that progress needs to happen at a faster pace for key issues, such as patient involvement and protection of rights. It also highlights the 10 per cent rise in use of the act in 2014/15

Age UK examine the unmet mental health needs of older people

‘Hidden in plain sight’ details the unmet mental health needs of older people. The report describes latest findings from the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey – highlighting the common under-treatment of mental health conditions and the wide inequalities in access to this care. It is estimated that depression affects 22 percent of men and 28 percent of women aged 65 or over, and 40 percent of older people in care homes.
