Fourth QualityWatch report reflects pressures in the system

The Health Foundation and Nuffield Trust have produced the fourth annual statement from the joint research programme, QualityWatch. In their foreword, Jennifer Dixon and Nigel Edwards note that “when pressures bite, the first thing to give is access to care” and warn that the myriad of pressures being placed on the system could “lead to ‘delayed decline’ in areas of quality so far unaffected.”

National Audit Office provides overview of Department of Healths performance

This report from the National Audit Office provides an overview of the Department of Health’s performance for the year ending March 2016. The Department of Health (DH) has to reduce its budget by a third by 2020. This, coupled with strong financial and demand pressures on the NHS budget, meant that 2015/16 was a challenging year for DH.

Learning from deaths not given sufficient priority in the NHS, say CQC

In June 2016 the Care Quality Commission (CQC) launched a review into how NHS acute, community healthcare and mental health trusts investigate deaths and learn from their investigations. Commissioned by NHS England, the review also assessed whether opportunities to prevent deaths have been missed. The review’s final report concludes that learning from deaths is not currently being given sufficient priority within the NHS, both nationally and locally.

CQC publish annual review of the Mental Health Act

In its annual review of the Mental Health Act the Care Quality Commission outlines how several healthcare services in England are using the Act to maximise people’s recovery, wellbeing and support when they have been detained. However, it raises concerns that progress needs to happen at a faster pace for key issues, such as patient involvement and protection of rights. It also highlights the 10 per cent rise in use of the act in 2014/15

It draws on the responses of finance directors in 128 providers and 73 CCGs, received during October and early November 2016. Overall, the survey finds many organisations under severe financial pressures and concern among many that quality of patient services is starting to deteriorate
