Focusing on support for people aged 65 and over in 20 local systems, this report finds that poor communication between providers of health and social care has created a challenging environment for older people, in some cases contributing to the deterioration of their conditions. The authors make four recommendations; joint commissioning, a new approach to performance management, joint workforce planning and more joined up regulation and oversight.

The Strategy Unit looks at the impact of different types of integration on clinical outcomes

In this report, the Strategy Unit considers how different types of integration impact clinical outcomes across four different local authorities. They find that while integration had some measurable impact, this cannot be attributed to any one type of integration. They finish by recommending that the NHS takes a more systematic and transparent approach to consulting on and implementing structural change

The Department of Health and Social Care publish their annual report and accounts

In their annual report, the department of health and social care gives it’s rundown on how the system has performed in the period 2017-18. Acknowledging rising expectations, it concedes that a milieu of pressures mean core waiting times and access targets were not met. On the financial side it reports broad overall financial balance, but while 4 fewer provider trusts were in deficit, 18 CCGs reported overspends. The report finishes with a look at transformation, stating that while a number of challenges remain, there is some potential to make significant progress over the coming 10 years.

The Nuffield Trust offer guidance on the role of estates within local transformation plans

Highlighting the importance of estates within the wider NHS, this report lays out nine challenges for local systems looking to create effective estate strategies. The authors emphasise the importance of leadership and guidance at a national level, citing this as critical to enabling local led efforts. At the local level, they suggest that STPs look to deliver infrastructure projects that bring wider economic and social value, rather than just being a place to provide health and care services. The report concludes by stating that at the heart of all successful estates strategies are people.

Public Health England assess care pathways for patients seeking specialist alcohol treatment

This paper, from Public Health England details some of the barriers that exist for care pathways between secondary care and specialist alcohol treatment. It’s key finding was that greater coordination was required between all stakeholders involved in the care of a patient. This, it argued, could only be achieved through agreed protocols and a shared case management IT system. The paper concludes by stressing that the patient should be at the centre of any join working between services.

The King’s Fund consider new GDRP regulations and the implications for the NHS

The King’s find assess the impact of new GDPR regulations to research and quality in the NHS. They identify three key challenges; regional variation between CCGs in terms of higher/lower ’opt-out’ rates, demographic variations in terms of opt-out rates and rising opt-out rates more generally. The report argues that these challenges will make data collection more difficult and may introduce unwanted variations into datasets, skewing results.
