In December 2015 NHS England released its planning guidance for 2016/17. Part of this year’s planning round is the requirement for local health areas’ to create a plan for accelerating the implementation of the Five Year Forward View. These ‘Sustainability and Transformation Plans’ (STPs) are place-based, multi-year blueprints for their local areas and are designed to avoid the additional funding secured in the Spending Review simply ‘propping-up institutions’.

Since December further work has been developed on STPs and it has now been agreed that there will be 44 STP areas with each led by a local leader from a CCG, Local Authority or provider.

What NHSPN is doing?

Brokering service

Within the NHS Partners Network membership, there are members with different specialist skills from international services right through to smaller bespoke services. Any NHS commissioners and/or providers who have specific requirements and would like to discuss what is available through our membership please email Sejal Patel at sejal.patel@nhsconfed.org.

Capital, Capacity and Capability

Jointly with the NHS Confederation, circulating a publication themed around independent sector capital, capacity and capability to all 44 STP footprint leads, CCG Accountable Officers and Trust and FT Chief Executives. This document is now available on the Confederation website and is being supported by the Confederation communications team through their social media channels.

Events

NHSPN organised two events on Thursday 19th May in London and Tuesday 24th May in Leeds, aimed at supporting those engaged in designing their STPs to understand how the independent sector can help deliver their goals and what kind of partnerships are currently operating within the NHS and how they might evolve in future.

The events looked further into the themes of the publication "Capital, capacity and capability" as well as generating discussion between NHS colleagues and independent sector providers.

Case studies

The independent sector delivers a highly wide range of NHS clinical services across the UK, including:
  • Acute
  • Clinical home health care
  • Community
  • Diagnostic
  • Primary, and
  • Dentistry
  • along with many others.
Here is a sample of some case studies highlighting the services they provide.

We hope that this national approach helps members engage in local STP planning and also fosters greater collaboration and partnership working with colleagues across the health and care system. NHSPN is keen to receive feedback on how this is developing so please do let us know if you have any feedback from seeking engagement in STPs and we will continue to keep members informed of national policy developments. The primary contact for this programme will be Sejal Patel who can be contacted at sejal.patel@nhsconfed.org.
