Press release: NHS Confederation comments on Healthcare Commission patient survey

14 May 2008

Jo Webber

Commenting on the Healthcare Commission's survey on adult inpatients, Jo Webber, deputy policy director of the NHS Confederation, which represents 95 per cent of NHS organisations, said:

"It is reassuring to see that overall, more patients are satisfied with the quality of care they receive, and that the majority of trusts are achieving highly in this area. As well as progress in waiting times and team work among staff, the survey highlights areas for improvemen, so trusts can see the lessons they need to learn from others to help deliver a more consistent, high quality of care.

"We should not underestimate the importance of getting the basics right. It is extremely important that patients get the help they need in eating meals and feel staff are available to talk to them about their treatment, as part of a wider package of dignified care. An NHS Confederation debate paper launched next week will highlight how important it is to foster a culture of compassion in the health service, and embed this across all care settings."
