Press release: Primary Care Trust Network comment on Audit Commission report 'Putting commissioning into practice'

Commenting on the survey, David Stout, Director of the PCT Network which represents the majority of Primary Care Trusts said:
"Practice based commissioning was developed to engage clinicians in commissioning to improve the quality of patient care. PCTs are currently involved in an ambitious programme of improvement through world class commissioning, of which PbC is an integral part . It should be seen in the context of PCTs' wider commissioning role, and is not just about financial management.
As the report suggests, robust budgets, accessible information and sound governance will of course help ensure the success of PbC. However, we must be careful not to expect a "one-size fits all" model. PbC must be used flexibly to deliver innovative and locally responsive services.
"GPs wishing to become involved with commissioning should be encouraged, but we cannot expect every GP to want to become involved in service redesign or hold budgets. Those who choose to focus on clinical practice should be able to do so with the confidence that their patients can continue to access excellent care."
