14 Jun 2006
The NHS Confederation, which represents more than 90 per cent of NHS organisations, today launches its latest version of the NHS Pocket Guide. The 2006/07 version not only covers all of the latest hot topics facing the service but is also now UK wide.Dr Gill Morgan, Chief Executive of the NHS Confederation, said:
"This year's pocket guide provides an up-to-date snap shot of the NHS. In a time of significant change and great uncertainty, as well as huge opportunities, the Pocket Guide really is a valuable tool in getting to grips with a very complex system.
"Whether you have years of NHS experience or are working in or alongside the health service, I am sure you will find this an indispensable aid to understanding the modern NHS."
The NHS: a pocket guide 2006/07 has been written by ex Health Service Journal editor, Peter Davies. It includes new sections on:
- Payment by results
- New pharmacy contract
- Increase in non-NHS providers
- Commissioning a patient-led NHS
- Your health, your care, your say White Paper
- Progress for National Programme for IT
- Workforce reforms
In addition to new sections on the various hot issues facing the NHS, the Pocket Guide 2006/07 is the first ever version to be UK-wide. Although the underlying principles governing the health services in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are the same - we are seeing very different systems emerging. The new pocket guide will help those working in healthcare navigate these new systems.
Talking about The NHS: a pocket guide 2006/07, James Johnson, Chairman of Council, British Medical Association said: "A timely, authoritative and invaluable source-book for those working in and with the NHS."
