Press release: NHS Confederation welcomes Chief Executive's report to the NHS
03 Dec 2003
The NHS Confederation today hails Sir Nigel Crisp's report on the NHS for underlining the impressive progress that is being made in the service and calls for a new approach to assessing NHS performance.
Gill Morgan, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, said: "This report challenges recent misleading claims about the state of the NHS. It confirms what our members are telling us about an NHS that has made impressive progress by treating more patients more quickly and more conveniently."
"This report shows that It is time to move away from outdated judgements on NHS performance based solely on hospital activity as increasingly treatment is taking place in the community. We need to construct a more rounded assessment of how the NHS is performing so that the real benefits that are taking place are recorded in analysis of the NHS."
Gill added: "There needs to be a shift in attention at all levels within the service and beyond so that effective care for patients with long-term conditions becomes a real priority. One third of people in this country suffer from long-term conditions and tackling this should be top of the agenda for the NHS in the 21st Century."
