Press release: NHS Confederation welcomes CHI's assessment that the "NHS is improving"
09 May 2003
The NHS Confederation today welcomed the publication of "Getting Better?" by the Commission for Health Improvement.
Dr Gill Morgan commented "We welcome CHI's assessment that the NHS is improving. It is refreshing to read a report that does not talk down the service and that reflects the honest assessment by the public that the NHS is getting better."
"The NHS Confederation has long argued that investment in management is an investment in patient care. This report endorses this view and underlines the importance of effective leadership in transforming services. However, we recognise that more needs to be done to attract doctors into managerial roles. The Confederation has been looking closely at this issue, and recently held a summit with leaders of the medical profession to explore the complementary contributions of medicine and management to improving care for patients."
Dr Morgan concluded, "This report highlights that the hard work being done by all NHS staff is having a real impact. We now need to build on improvements and ensure that examples of best practice are spread throughout the service."
