Press release: NHS Confederation welcomes recognition of progress in the NHS

15 Aug 2002

The NHS Confederation welcomed today's Audit Commission commentary (1) on the performance of the NHS in England as evidence of significant improvement across a wide range of key areas.

Gill Morgan, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, said: "This demonstrates that there is much to celebrate in today's NHS. It is important that we acknowledge and support tangible changes and achievements. Of course, there is a way to go, and this also highlights areas for further improvement, suggesting that more can be done to spread excellence throughout the service. It is significant that the report acknowledges the key role that management plays in achieving this. The Confederation welcomes this as the first authoritative refutation of the myth that there are too many managers in the NHS (2)."

The Confederation also welcomes the format and approach of the report. Gill Morgan said: "It provides a balanced and honest assessment of NHS services that will prove a useful jargon-free summary for patients and the public. This form of accessible audit is a valuable contribution to real public accountability in the NHS and we hope that this can be built upon in future."
