Press release: NHS Confederation welcomes outcome of GMS ballot

16 Jul 2002

The NHS Confederation today has warmly welcomed the outcome of the ballot on the new GMS contract.

Commenting, NHS Confederation lead negotiator, Mike Farrar said: "This vote shows that the negotiated framework has won the confidence of GPs across the UK and we can now move confidently to the next stage - pricing the contract." He continued, "the Confederation and BMA worked closely and on a very short timescale to produce a new contract that deals with the issues facing GPs on a day-to-day basis and I am delighted that doctors have endorsed our approach."

Commenting on behalf of the NHS Confederation, chief executive, Gill Morgan said, "the new GMS contract is a vital tool in modernising primary care and a lynch-pin in recruiting and retaining GPs for the NHS. I am pleased that the NHS Confederation has a key role in these negotiations which have set a new and imaginative way of working for the future. We feel that the progress made so far is a vindication of the confidence placed in us to deliver."
