Press release: NHS Confederation calls for renewed commitment to GP negotiations after BMA ballot

01 Jun 2001

The NHS Confederation, representing primary care trusts, stressed that the result of the BMA's ballot of its GP membership on resignation is a distraction from the urgent task of moving forward negotiations on GPs contracts. Chief executive Stephen Thornton said "there's no doubt that primary care is under significant pressure and that there is a pressing need for more GPs; but this still leaves us wondering exactly what was to be achieved by such a ballot. The time for posturing is over. The BMA and the government should get around the negotiating table as soon as possible after the election."
