The impact of new technology on acute care

This session will look at technological innovations in the areas of genetics and diagnostics and their likely impact on acute care. Their impact on current care pathways, risk assessment, screening and treatment will be discussed. Other issues explored in this session include:

  • how will these technologies impact on patient outcomes, and what are the implications for clinicians and managers?
  • If new technologies improve clinical effectiveness in specific areas, will they increase demand in other areas of the healthcare system?

Day and time: Wednesday 16:00-17:30

Will Academic Health Science Centres make a difference

Is this an issue for the hospitals or everybody? This session will debate the development of academic health science centres discussing the benefits and challenges arising from their devolvement for improving patient care, delivering world-class research and teaching. While also assessing their impact on other university hospitals which are not academic health science centres. Professor Stephen Smith from Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Imperial College London will argue in favour of the proposal and Brian Edwards from West Midlands SHA will argue against.

Day and time: Thursday 09:00-10:30

Meet the primary care market

The Government would like to increase the number and type of primary care providers particularly in under doctored areas. This session offers the opportunity to meet new providers of primary care services and discuss the clinical innovations they are proposing to deliver. Delegates will be able to meet with a range of different providers of primary care from the private sector.
