Transformational leadership for the future

This session will describe the model of transformational leadership at RLCT which has been developed through The Health Foundation with help from Dr Bill Lucas. It will explore the key qualities of leaders at all levels to both lead a service transformation of this scale and embed the improvements arising from it and give practical hints and tips on developing those qualities. This will be an 'interactive and fun' session.

The impact of new technology on acute care
This session will look at technological innovations in the areas of genetics and diagnostics and their likely impact on acute care. Their impact on current care pathways, risk assessment, screening and treatment will be explored. The session will also explore issues including:
- how will these technologies impact on patient outcomes, and what are the implications for clinicians and managers?
- If new technologies improve clinical effectiveness in specific areas, will they increase demand in other areas of the healthcare system?

Tackling inequality through information and learning
In this session you will have the opportunity to discuss techniques such as information prescriptions, population segmentation and targeted social marketing. Speakers from the NHS, third sector and private sector will be on hand to provide their experiences at addressing health inequalities.

Spotting and responding to key innovations
This session will focus on changes and innovations that could redefine how significant parts of the NHS work. 'Disruptive' innovations can come from unexpected sources - eg the evolution of the personal computer or the unanticipated adaptation of technologies used for other purposes. Presentations will cover topics such as:
- What can we learn from the past? Which innovations worked, and which didn't?
- What did come from left field and make a major difference? What innovations are coming down the track? How should we prepare ourselves and our organisations for them?

Involving patients to improve the quality of care
This session will explore different methods of engaging patients to improve quality of care. Health Dialog will provide delegates with an understanding of the role of health coaching and the importance of information in shared decision making. Delegates will also hear about a CSIP initiative where service users, carers and service providers learn in partnership to apply service improvement techniques together at Surrey University. The session will also help delegates better understand how involving patients can be used to improve outcomes and reduce costs.

Why should a chief executive care about human resource issues?
This session will look at how HR departments contribute to the overall success of the organisation. It will look at emerging evidence on the links between good HR practice and overall success. It will examine research from The Health Foundation on improving staff engagement.

Choice is integral to the modernisation of the NHS and marketing is now more important in the NHS portfolio than ever. This session will look at how we can communicate our services to the public and build our reputation, whilst maintaining confidence in the NHS brand.
