The NHS Confederation and Independent Healthcare Advisory Services have established a provider advisory group to take practical steps on reducing bureaucracy in the NHS, following publication of our bureaucratic burden in the NHS report in 2007.
The burden of regulation
Provider advisory group for regulators
The advisory group represents the range of healthcare providers (including public, independent and third sectors) as well as regulators. It seeks to advise on the impact of existing (or proposed) regulatory frameworks for providers, with a focus on reducing duplication and bureaucratic burden. Peter W Mount, CBE, Chairman, Central Manchester and Manchester Children's University Hospitals NHS Trust is the groups chair and Dr Andrew Jones, Group medical director Nuffield hospitals , the vice chair.
The group aims include:
- providing feedback on the impact of current regulatory or inspection regimes;
- advising on areas where duplication remains an issue and facilitate workable solutions;
- promoting agreement on regulatory processes and ensure that regulators remain committed to share information more intelligently;
- assisting the IC in streamlining data collections to prevent unnecessary / disproportionate burdens on the service;
- Reviewing and giving feedback on the success of the concordat work programme

Provider advisory group work update
Healthcare regulation has increased and organisations experience burden as assessments are duplicated and the same or similar information is requested from different sources. The provider advisory group is working to ensure a more appropriate streamlined approach and to influence the philosophy and culture of regulation and data collection.
