2008 chairs conference programme

The 2008 chairs conference takes place on Tuesday 29 January 2008 at the Riverbank Park Plaza in London. The event is being organised by The Appointments Commission in association with the Department of Health, Monitor, the NHS Confederation and the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement.

The role of the board in effective service delivery William Moyes (Executive Chairman, Monitor)

Commissioning boards and world class commissioning Mark Britnell (Director General of Commissioning and System Management, DH)

12.45 Meet other delegates from your area over lunch

13.45 Introduction to the afternoon session Stephen Thornton (Chief Executive, The Health Foundation)

13.50 An alternative perspective Bob Garratt (author of 'The fish rots from the head' and visiting fellow at Imperial College)

14.40 Quality and safety: The role of chairs and boards

Professor Bernard Crump (Chief Executive, NHS Institute for Innovation & Improvement); Maureen Bisognano (Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Institute for Healthcare Improvement); James Reinertsen (MD, Senior Fellow, IHI President, The Reinertsen Group, Alta, Wyoming, USA)

This will be a session run by the NHS Institute for Innovation & Improvement and Institute for Healthcare Improvement and to include case studies to demonstrate how boards can improve safety in their organisations. It will fundamentally be a session on generic 'good governance', but use this topic as an example of how boards can work to improve safe delivery of services.
