Children playing

The NHS Confederation believes it is vital to address the health needs of children and young people, both in their own right and as future adults. We think this is best achieved by:

  • the NHS ensuring it is commissioning, designing and delivering services tailored to the needs of children and young people
  • giving information that supports lifestyle decisions and choices
  • playing a central role in the co-ordination of the broader implementation of children's care services at a local level

The NHS Confederation is committed to having an active role in the development and implementation of the cross-governmental agenda for children and young people. We do this through our involvement with the Children's Inter-Agency Group, a partnership of key voluntary sector organisations, local government representatives and ourselves, and through our own contacts with the new Department of Health and Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).

Independent National CAMHS Review

The NHS Confederation will be contributing member views to the comprehensive review of child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) in England.

To inform our response on behalf of members we are keen to hear the views of your board about any aspect of CAMHS services that you commission or provide (tiers 1 to 4) including their funding, structures, performance, commissioning, delivery, partnerships, policy and workforce.

Specifically, we are looking for up to five of your organisation's main challenges and suggested solutions in relation to CAMHS, including any examples of good practice. Please email jenny.plumb@nhsconfed.org by 16 June with your response.

Change for children programme
The new Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) has 'dual key' arrangements with other Government departments, including the Department of Health (DH). These arrangements cover all main policy areas for children including children's sport, youth justice and child health and wellbeing.

Speech and language therapy review
The NHS Confederation is compiling a response to the Department for Children, Schools and Families' (DCSF) review of paediatric speech and language therapy.

Confederation representation
Through our Inter-Agency Group (IAG) involvement, and separately, we meet regularly with senior officials from both the Department of Health and the Department for Children, Schools and Families, the Minister for Children, Young People and Families and the National Clinical Director for Children and Young People.

Member involvement
We want to strengthen member involvement in our children and young people work by refreshing our e-mail network of interested members.

Aiming high for disabled children
Following a joint review of disabled children's services undertaken by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and HM Treasury, the government launched the document Aiming High for Disabled Children: Better Support for Families.
