NHS Confederation chairman Bryan Stoten told annual conference delegates on 18 June he believes it is right to recognise and celebrate the fantastic achievements of the NHS in its 60th anniversary year. He also set out the findings of a members' poll, showing that, while NHS leaders are optimistic about the future, they are not expecting a period of stability.

Alongside his promise of no more structural changes, health secretary Alan Johnson told conference delegates of his plans to assess how compassionately care is being delivered. Acting director of the NHS Confederation, Steve Barnett, said there is no quick fix for addressing the problem of compassion in the NHS.

In his keynote address, NHS chief executive David Nicholson explained that he wants the NHS constitution to have a clear value base that reflects what matters to patients, staff and the public. He told delegates: “I am, and you should, be extraordinarily proud of what we’ve achieved over the last two or three years. But we can’t look at the past. We need to ‘bank’ that and look to the future.
