The NHS Confederation is working with the Local Government Association, HEFCE, and Universities UK on an exciting new development called the Local Growth Academy.

The annual Local Growth Academy conference will be held on 28 March 2018 at Woburn Conference Centre in London and will focus on the Industrial Strategy. More tickets will be made available in the new year.
Why a Local Growth Academy?
Across the country institutions from the public, health and higher education sectors have built effective partnerships which are fundamental to the success of their local economies. Many of these partnerships are making good use of existing investment finance from a wide range of sources, recognising the increasing fiscal constraints of national public finances.
However, the structure of investment finance is changing, with a range of new mechanisms that reflect an increased focus on local economic partnerships and performance. These trends require institutions to think differently and engage with external stakeholders in new ways.
The purpose of the Local Growth Academy is to support universities, local and combined authorities and NHS organisations in navigating this fast-evolving environment, and to build operational capacity in order to maximise their contribution to and involvement in local developments. Benefits will include:
- Better understanding of the range of new infrastructure financing mechanisms emerging
- An increase in the number and value of projects which attract new forms of investment finance
- Building the individual and collective capacities of NHS organisations to act as more sophisticated clients when developing large-scale collaborative projects
- Strengthening and sustaining collaborative capacity across different institutions
- Sharing innovation and best practice
Why should NHS leaders get involved in the Academy?
With capital finance in the NHS severely constrained yet critical to realising the ambitions of STPs and other local plans, this development is very timely and will help NHS organisations understand where and how to access the new and emerging finance mechanisms that will determine local infrastructure planning.
Who will I hear from?
The sessions will be delivered by public agencies and an informal consortia of professional service firms with particular areas of expertise. The organisations presenting will be selected by an Academy Steering Group.
What issues will I discuss?
The strength of the Academy is in the breadth of issues, and colleagues, it brings together.
Modules 1 and 2 focus on the role of place, devolution, project development, new forms of financing, the localisation of fiscal policy, inclusive growth, working with private partners and strategic organisational choices.

When and where will the Academy meet?
Modules 1 and 2 of the Academy take place in four regional groupings across England between April and October 2017. Additional Academy modules will take place from the autumn through to spring 2018, with sessions repeated in London and the north.
How do I register?
Participants in the Academy would ideally be an aspirant future leader or a senior member of your team with responsibility for finance, transformation or external stakeholder management. The VC and CEO of your local partner university and/or council will be approached about this so you may want to liaise with them about joint local participation.
Places will be limited and there may be a one-off charge for modules to cover costs of venues, dinner and refreshments.
