The Foundation Trust Network's conference 'Driving improvement: how will the system develop quality and safety?' was held on Wednesday 29 October in London.
The driving improvement: how will the system develop quality and safety? conference gave delegates the opportunity to share learning across different sectors, debate current issues with peers and learn from the successes and experiences of other foundation trusts.
Summary of the conference
The FTN launched its first national conference on quality with an overview from Lord Darzi on his vision for taking the quality agenda forward. Baroness Barbara Young was also present and presented the CQC's quality model, its system of registration and enforcement, followed by Bruce Keogh presenting on the importance of incentivising clinical leaders in order to achieve excellence.
One of the key drivers for continuous improvement in FTs is the Board; David Probert, Chief Operating Officer at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust gave an FT perspective on the role of the Board, the importance of Board level reporting and management and the critical success factors in ensuring quality. He emphasised the positive impact that achieving FT status has had on enabling the trust to meet the quality agenda.
Mike Farrar, Chief Executive, NHS North West gave a strategic overview of the North West's Advancing Quality programme, a revolutionary programme aimed at improving patient care and saving lives whilst reducing costs. The plenary sessions ended with David Stout, Director of the PCT Network at the NHS Confederation providing the commissioner perspective.
Delegates had a choice of attending 5 workshops on: drivers for improving quality; patient safety; strategies for clinical leadership and engagement and delivering quality in mental health and on the lessons from the North West incentives pilots. Detailed notes of these will be available on our website shortly
