In September 2007 the NHS European Office was set up to inform NHS organisations of key EU developments and to promote the priorities and interests of the NHS to the European Institutions.

The Office is funded by the 10 Strategic Health Authorities and is part of the NHS Confederation.

Key issues
The EU Steering Group sets the European Office's work programme and priorities. On this page you will find the latest news on EU developments in our priority areas and information on our work programme.

Events
The NHS European Office organises and participates in events across the UK and Brussels in order to promote the work of the NHS at European level, and to raise awareness of EU developments impacting on the NHS.

European Partners
The Office works in partnership with a number of organisations in the UK and abroad. These partnerships are an important way of sharing information with healthcare related organisations across Europe, and of reinforcing our views on legislative and policy developments at European level.

EU Funding
The European Commission provides funding for projects in order to carry out studies or activities relevant to European Union policies.

Get involved
The NHS European Office monitors and engages with EU developments which have an impact on the NHS. This may be in the form of developing position papers and lobbying, and through responding to EU Consultations. In order to represent the NHS effectively we rely on the involvement of NHS professionals for their expertise in specific areas of work.

EU Parliament supports hospital opt-out of the EU emissions trading scheme
Hospital building The NHS European Office has successfully lobbied the European Parliament to exclude hospitals from EU proposals to revise the European Emissions Trading Scheme. Read more
New EU rules aim to reduce emissions from the NHS vehicle fleet
Traffic queue Euro MPs and Ministers have agreed new EU rules which aim to drive the market for clean energy efficient vehicles. Read more.
Agreement reached on temporary agency workers directive
The European Parliament has voted to adopt a directive which will see agency workers in the UK get the same basic pay and conditions as permanent staff after being employed for 12 weeks. Read more.
Cross border care
The European Commission has published legal proposals aiming to clarify patients' rights to seek medical treatment in other European countries and to obtain reimbursements from their home health system. Read more
EU funding for health research projects
The European Commission has published a call for proposals for health-related projects under the EU research programme. The call lists a number of areas eligible for EU funding which may be of interest to NHS organisations. Read more.
EU Consultations
Cross border care Consultation
The NHS European Office is seeking views from members on the European Commission's recent proposals on patients' rights to access cross border care. The consultation paper sets out a number of questions for members' consideration and the views received will contribute to the European Office position paper and lobbying strategy. The deadline for responses is Friday 14 November. Read more
EU Consults on medical devices legislation
The NHS European Office has responded to an EU Consultation aimed at simplifying existing EU legislation on medical devices. While welcoming the proposal to simplify the current situation, the Office has highlighted a need to support the role of national bodies in monitoring clinical data and standards within medical devices, and proposed measures to regulate quasi-medical devices outside of the medical devices directive. Events
DH Consultation events on Cross-border care
The Department of health is urgently seeking NHS views to the European Commission’s recent proposals on patients’s rights to access healthcare in another EU country. NHS organisations have an opportunity to learn more about the proposals and to put forward their views through two events: 26 November in London at Holiday Inn Mayfair, and 1st December in Manchester at Ramada Manchester Piccadilly.
